Let's get real.
If the city of Warwick has any surplus, give thanks to the hard working Warwick taxpayers, they are the ones who created the surplus, NOT THE MAYOR!
It's rather ironic that we have a budget surplus ($5 million-ish) and yet, as the Mayor's now retiring finance director pointed out last week, the city has a $0 funded retiree healthcare plan to the tune of $290 million.
The city's 4 pension plans also have an unfunded obligation approaching $300 million.
The big spin on this so called "city surplus" ($5 million-ish) can be compared to the scenario of one who has a maxed out credit card, and is only making the minimum payments every month, while the extra cash is being used at the casino.
The Mayor puts back $5 million-ish into his savings account that he took from the taxpayers to balance the budget, and yet the city is still in debt to the tune of a total of $1 Billion. Mr. Mayor, if this was a private corporation going to the bank to take out a loan, you'd be laughed out of the bank.
So let's stop with the game of cards. You are doing absolutely nothing to pay down the city's debt.
This "surplus" news is all hogwash, zilch, nada, nothing.
I'm sure your cronies will be coming to you for more overfill at the city trough the end of this fiscal year, and I'm also sure you will find all of the ways possible to fund your city retiree millionaire club.
